The Patented Modification

The modification enhances the aerodynamic efficiency of the wing. In general, this modification to the Boeing 737 realizes reduced fuel consumption by increasing the aircraft's lift-to-drag ratio.

The aft segments of the trailing edge flaps are relocated aft and below their standard locations when the flaps are retracted. These changes result in increased wing area, increased airfoil camber, and a lengthened wing cord.

Specifically, this creates a more highly cambered trailing edge of the airfoil. The aft flap segments resume their normal positions in regards to the other flap segments during flap deployment. Trailing edge flaps are not limited in travel or operation. Induced drag is directly related to the angle of attack, and thus a greater angle generates more induced drag. The increased aft wing camber enables the airfoil to achieve the same lift at a lower angle of attack.
